Proverbs 22:28 Do not remove the ancient landmark which your fathers have set.
The book of Proverbs warns us against removing the physical landmarks that set the boundaries for ancient landholdings, but this wisdom runs much deeper than just maintaining a survey of the land. The Church Fathers, men who established the Church from its inception, set the landmarks for the Church, and the Founding Fathers of our nation set the landmarks for our country; it was also our Ancestral Fathers—our earthy fathers and grandfathers and great-grandfathers—who set the landmarks for our families.
In a culture that seems bent on tearing down heritage and history we need to be reminded over and over again to leave those landmarks in place. Without them we have no boundaries for our most beloved institutions, church, country, and family. In order to move forward we must always be looking backward to see where our fathers established those landmarks. Without them we wander blindly outside the boundaries our fathers set for us, and the result is chaos within the church, the nation, and the home.
For those who desire to deconstruct, teardown, and remove the ancient landmarks our historical fathers set for us and establish new landmarks with new boundaries for the Church, our Nation, and the Family, consider the wisdom of this Proverb.
“Do not remove the ancient landmark which your fathers have set.”
To “cancel” our heritage and our history, to remove the landmarks that define us, is an act of foolishness.
